Every Great Hospitality Project Starts with These Five Questions

Every hospitality project starts long before the first finish is specified or the first fabric memo is ordered. It starts with a conversation.

After years of partnering with interior designers, hotel brands, casino operators, and senior living communities, we've noticed something interesting. While every project has its own personality, budget, and goals, many of the same questions come up again and again. They're thoughtful questions that go beyond selecting the right fabric or choosing the perfect color palette. They're the kinds of conversations that shape how a space will look, perform, and feel for years after opening day.

There are rarely universal answers because every project is different. The right solution depends on the property, the guest experience, the architecture, and the vision behind the design. Still, there are a few guiding principles that consistently help designers create spaces with lasting impact.

How Do I Balance Beautiful Design with Long-Term Performance?

This is usually the first conversation, and for good reason.

Hospitality interiors experience more use in a week than many residential spaces see in months. Fabrics are touched constantly, window treatments are opened and closed every day, and guestrooms need to look just as inviting for the thousandth guest as they did for the first.

That doesn't mean sacrificing beautiful design in favor of performance. It means specifying materials that deliver both.

We're seeing more designers look beyond color and pattern alone, paying close attention to weave construction, durability, cleanability, and how materials will age over time. A thoughtfully selected textile should continue contributing to the overall design story long after installation, developing character instead of looking tired.

The best-performing materials are often the ones guests never think about because they simply work exactly as they should.

Where Should Pattern Create the Biggest Impact?

Pattern is one of the easiest ways to give a hospitality space personality, but it also requires restraint.

Rather than introducing bold patterns throughout an entire project, many designers are creating focal points that guide the guest's eye naturally through the space. Upholstery, decorative drapery, accent seating, or feature walls often become opportunities to introduce visual interest while allowing supporting materials to create balance.

When every surface competes for attention, nothing truly stands out. Instead, think about how pattern contributes to the overall rhythm of the interior. Large-scale prints may create energy in a lobby, while more subtle woven textures can bring warmth to guestrooms without overwhelming the environment. Coordinating textiles across multiple applications also helps create continuity, allowing each space within the property to feel connected while maintaining its own identity.

Which Window Treatment Solution Makes the Most Sense for This Space?

Window treatments are often one of the last specifications discussed, but they influence the guest experience from the moment someone enters the room.

Natural light, privacy, acoustics, energy efficiency, and comfort all depend on selecting the right combination of solutions rather than a single product.

For guestrooms, layered systems continue to be one of the most effective approaches. Sheers preserve daylight and exterior views while softening glare during the day. Decorative drapery introduces warmth, texture, and visual depth. Blackout curtains create the darkness guests expect for uninterrupted sleep, particularly in destinations where daylight extends well into the evening.

In public spaces, the conversation shifts slightly. Window treatments often become part of the architectural experience, helping define scale, soften large expanses of glass, and contribute to the overall atmosphere while still supporting operational needs.

When these systems are considered early in the design process, they become an integral part of the space rather than an afterthought.

How Do I Create a Cohesive Material Story Throughout the Property?

Guests experience a hospitality property as one continuous journey.

They move from the arrival experience to the lobby, into elevators, along corridors, and finally into guestrooms. Every transition shapes their perception of the property, which is why consistency matters.

That doesn't mean every space should look identical.

Instead, successful hospitality projects build a material language that carries throughout the property. Color palettes evolve naturally between spaces. Textures repeat in different ways. Window treatments, upholstery, and decorative fabrics complement one another while responding to the unique function of each environment.

This layered approach creates familiarity without repetition, giving each space its own character while reinforcing the overall design narrative.

How Do I Specify Materials That Will Still Feel Relevant Years from Now?

Perhaps the most important question designers ask has very little to do with trends.

Hospitality projects are significant investments, and no one wants a property to feel dated just a few years after opening. Creating longevity starts with understanding the difference between incorporating trends and building an entire project around them.

The interiors that continue to feel fresh years later are usually grounded in timeless materials, balanced proportions, and thoughtful craftsmanship. Trends still play an important role, but they're introduced with intention through artwork, accent pieces, decorative textiles, or statement moments that can evolve over time without requiring a complete redesign.

The goal isn't to predict what design will look like five years from now. It's to create spaces that continue welcoming guests because every decision was made with purpose instead of permanence.

Every Great Hospitality Project Starts with the Right Questions

One of the things we enjoy most about working alongside interior designers is that no two conversations are ever exactly alike. Every project presents new opportunities, new challenges, and a new vision waiting to be brought to life.

The questions may sound familiar, but the answers are always shaped by the people, the property, and the experience you're creating.

At Decorator Industries, we believe the best hospitality projects begin with collaboration long before the final specifications are complete. From custom window treatments and coordinated textile solutions to fabrication expertise that supports every stage of the design process, we're here to help you ask the right questions and find the right solutions.

If you're beginning your next hospitality project, we'd love to be part of the conversation.
